Lots of chatter about virtual worlds lately and what / if they’re good for, how they make money and what people are doing in them. My 3 interests in this space, at least for now… -
Using virtual worlds to make 3D objects and then take the information out for a 3D printer - Link.
Using physical low cost hardware to cheaply run around in virtual worlds for sci/edu/entertainment and two-way device control - Link.

This Maker Moriash Moreau hooked up a treadmill so he can walk around in the virtual world of Second Life… - “I started my walk at the beginning of the road on the east edge of Abitibi, and followed it roughly westward (give or take some meandering) to Whiskey, a trip of approximately 6.3 kilometers. According to the Debug menu velocity HUD, I was moving at about 3.5 m/s (7.8 MPH). (This is a little faster than the normal walking speed of 3.0 m/s. Apparently tapping the forward key squeezes more speed out of a walk than holding it down. I have no good explanation for that. Perhaps the rig is signaling faster than the keyboard repeat rate?) As you can see, there’s a bit of a disparity between SL walking speed and my walking speed. According to Wikipedia, average human walking speed is about 1.0 to 1.5 m/s (2.2 […]

Our pal Mark at 3pointD is getting his virtual avatar from Second Life “3D printed”… - “Walker was produced by the Fabjectory 3D printing service of Second Life resident Hal9k Andalso (aka Mike Buckbee). I’m eager to see what Walker is like in real life, having occupied him virtually for almost two years now. (Is this a 3D model of Walker, or of me?) I love the idea of a 3D printing service for avatars, especially in full color; seems a sure thing to take off among SL residents, who are already obsessed with their in-world appearance.” - Link.
World of Warcraft characters, Second Life avatars, Google Sketchup/Earth can all be “3D printed” and now there’s a business that will do it…right on schedule.
