Remember the video we featured last week? Well the CoilOsapien (Robosapien Coil Gun) is done, look here for all of the details.
“When the servo is activated it turns the disc inside the housing, with each spin it will pick up one BB and drop it into the firing chamber. The coilgun will need to be on a slight angle whilst reloading to allow the BB to roll to the back of the chamber. The reload would function better if it could be setup behind the coil to drop the BB directly into position, this would also allow loading in any position. Due to the fact there was not enough room to mount it back there I went the easier less functional alternative.
The following list is what I used for the hack, there are many substitutes you could make here.
* At least one disposable camera with flash

This is an intro video of the CoilOSapien, Marcus will provide some build details in the near future!
Video after the jump.
“DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME KIDS!!!
The coilgun is controlled using the V2’s remote and is able to fire 8 shots with it’s electronic reload.
The charging time varies but is around the 5-10sec mark between shots, a red indicator light shows when the unit is charged and ready to fire, a laser sight aids in aiming.
A tutorial for the CoilOsapien hack will be found on my website this will discuss the theory and construction details of the coilgun modification.
Once again DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS HACK. Unless you are comfortable and familiar with potentially lethal voltages, eye damaging laser diodes and fast moving projectiles!!! ”
Thanks Robert

Robert from Robots Rule passed on a tip about a Pleo giveaway contest that some of you may be interested in.
“The Pleo pre-order date has been moved from February 3rd to sometime this
spring. To make up for it Ugobe is holding a contest to give away 10 Pleos in
a contest to those people that are signed up on Ugobe’s E-mail
list. You must be signed up by the contest start date before Febuary
3rd. The contest asks entrants to write a 250 word essay on “How do
you envision robotic life forms influencing or touching your life in the next
five years?”. Only the first 500 submissions will be accepted. Out of
those, 10 will be chosen based on the best answer given to receive a free Pleo
that will come with a personal note from Caleb Chung.
Pleo is being delayed due to upgrades like the following:
- It’s eyes […]

Once the full scale version of this car is made all it will need is a paint ball gun to keep the bad guys away!
“Build a security robot that can be controlled and viewed over the internet. The planned final version will be a kids 48″ electric car with a network camera attached.
1/4 Scale Trial Version:
I opted to try this out with a $20 RC car from Wal-Mart first, before I invest $200 in a kids car.
Parts:
Linksys WRT54G Router - Used as the wireless connection from Bestbuy
Comfiletech: Industrial Micro Controller/PLC “Cubloc”- http://www.comfiletech.com/index.asp
Maxport: Ethernet to RS232 converter with web server. From http://www.comfiletech.com/index.asp
Kowasaki RC car from Wal-Mart
Camera: None yet. I intend to use an Axis 206, when I can find one cheap on ebay”

Take your WowWee robots to the next level with Robodance.
“The next version of Robosapien Dance Machine, the free open source program also
known as Robodance, has support for the Nintendo Wii Remote. You can watch a
funny sneak preview video of this new release in action now. ( Warning: this
video contains graphic footage of a robot tickling Elmo! )
Robodance already lets you control your WowWee robot using just your voice, and
when you add in the power of scripts with the easy to use Wii remote, you get an
unbeatable combination for creating hilarious performances for you and your
family. The easy to use drag and drop interface makes the program accessible
to almost anyone with a Windows PC and a supported infrared transmitter.
Robodance won the coveted SourceForge Project Of The Month award for May 2005.
The new version is expected to be released on February 1, 2007, or sooner.”

10. Microcontroller Christmas Music
This project will allow you to create your own music using a microcontroller.
“With Christmas fast drawing near, I thought it appropriate to create a project that has a festive theme and also shows what the humble PICmicro is capable of doing with a little imagination and the right tools. i.e. PROTON+ Compiler.
Everyone and their reindeer has created Christmas projects in the past but most of them revolve around multi-coloured flashing LEDs. Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with flashing LEDs, but let’s face it, they don’t exactly stimulate the imagination?
So what I’ve created for your perusal is a project to play several well known Christmas tunes using 3 channel (polyphonic) sound, with each channel having a pleasant chime effect. And all this using nothing more than a handful of common or garden components that you probably already have lying around. And yes, you can flash […]

Here is a cool project in development, it’s a joystick for the PC that uses accelerometers to to detect user input. It uses a CUBLOC 405 module for the brains and a Dimension Engineering accelerometer to sense movement.
“Today, I was able to get a sneak preview of 6 Axis PC USB controller made by Garrett from scratch. It looks really cool, kinda like the Nintendo Wii controller and the PS3 controller. He used a CUBLOC 405 module, accelerometer, and an unknown USB controller. Garrett says he will have a howto very soon, so keep checking over the next couple days for the 6 axis controller. It’s not wireless yet but that should be the easy part.”

If you are interested in autonomous systems, this tiny helicopter does a good job for its small size.
“The purpose of this project was the design of a fully autonomous stabilization system intended for systems capable of intelligent programming and navigation. This means that the design focuses mainly on the control feedback systems that control the helicopter’s motors that then provide lift to increase and decrease altitude, and produce a tilt about the helicopter’s central vertical axis which would be used for stabilization and potentially lateral motion. We chose this project because it was an ambitious projected aimed to challenge us as well as provide a level of sophistication that would allow this project to be applicable not only as a semester project but to potentially be used in future projects.”

The Dual Control R/C Car is what you get when you take an R/C car and stuff it full of electronics. I bet it was fun to build.
“The purpose of this project was to take a traditional remote controlled car and create our own control mechanisms. To control the car, we used a dual-axis accelerometer and LEDs (light emitting diodes) configured as photo-detectors. The control mechanism was selected using a single pole dual throw (spdt) switch was wired in a single pole single throw (spst) configuration. The two-axis accelerometer was used as a tilt sensor that detected how far the chip was angled from its neutral, flat position. An analog voltage was produced for both the x- and y-axes that corresponded to how far the accelerometer was tilted, and in what direction.
A custom LED array was also used to control […]

Phillip Torrone from Make Magazine has put together a long list of open source gift ideas. Items include everything from a cool open source Home Automation System to their own POV device that is only $18.00!
Are there anything missing from the list, leave a comment and I will pass it along…
What is open source?
“There are hundreds of gift guides this holiday season filled with junk you can
buy - but a lot of time you actually don’t own it, you can’t improve upon it,
you can’t share it or make it better, you certainly can’t post the plans,
schematics and source code either. We want to change that, we’ve put together
our picks of interesting open source hardware projects, open source software,
services and things that have the Maker-spirit of open source. Some are kits,
some are open software projects that you’ll need to build hardware for before
gifting, and some are just support for the projects/groups […]

Check out Robo Community for many design pictures of the Robopet.
“As you will see, for the most part, the Robopet went through a pretty smooth birth from ideas, designs, and prototypes to finished product. About the only thing that seemed in question was how to structure its head and probably what kind of sensors to use in it”
Thanks Khalid
