Joe Grand and I got together this last year to shoot this 19 minute video that teaches you how to solder and desolder. This is required watching for anyone wanting to get into diy electronics.

In this video you’ll learn lots of tips and tricks that will make you a much better solderer. I grew up teaching myself to solder and since making this video with Joe, my soldering skills have improved a lot! I don’t overheat parts, I make less cold-solder joints, and in general my soldering is significantly neater.

In this video, you’ll learn the three ways to desolder parts too, which is a really important skill for circuit bending and hardware hacking. Learning how to use solder-wick, a solder sucker, and the Chip Quik kit will give you extra skill points and make you an awesome electronic deconstructionist.

Robot Race and Nitinol Lightswitch - Weekend Projects - Make Podcast

Ever since I heard about Nitinol, a shape-changing metal alloy, I’ve been wanting to play with it. In this video, I make a completely functional, but completely unnecessary lightswitch, put together a nitinol robot kit, an inch-bot and have a robot race!

I’m confident that you can figure out how to make cars and contraptions and have races without a kit, but I like kits when I’m learning about something new like nitinol, which I don’t have very much experience with. Then I can take what I’ve learned and do other things with it. When I learn about something new, I try out kits so that I can have some experience with something before hacking it apart and doing other things with it. If you’re into kits, we’ve just added a ton of them to the store to check out.

I’m trying out revver as a video host for […]

Robot Race and Nitinol Lightswitch Instructions - Make: Podcast

This weekend it’s time for a robot race! Put together some robots and race them for fun.

I started this week by learning about nitinol, which is a shape changing metal alloy made up of nickel and titanium. I did some brainstorming. What could you do with a wire that I can activate to make it 4% shorter? I decided on a lightswitch activator. I hooked up one side of the battery to the nitinol wire and then put a switch between the battery and the other side of the wire so that when I turn on the switch it feeds electricity to the nitinol wire and heats it up. The heat makes it contract and pull the lightswitch down. In the picture you can see that I put a dowel there to hold the waire away from the switch. Although not actually useful, […]
