Museum of Telecommunication

Bre has some great photos from the Museum of Telecommunication, he writes -
The Museum of Telecommunication, aka, The Telephone Museum, is a must see for any tinkerer. Run by folks who spent a good chunk of time working for the phone company, this place is a treasure trove of gadgets and telecommunication devices. Rich Barger took my friends and I on a tour around 2 floors of amazing clicking machines and explained the magic of telephones, switchboards, relays, and showed us how it all works. If there is a machine that has been used in communicating over wires, they’ve got it there and it works.

Coleman’s military surplus

Erik writes -
Hey, I was browsing around yesterday and found this site. They carry a TON of cool things for Makers all around. for instance, military grade ammunition boxs/cans of all kinds and insanely low prices (i.e $10 for full metal ammo boxes) Along with 24$ Geiger counters as well as all sorts of tactical gear. Thought you might be interested as I can already think of quite a few projects I could use this with.
Ammo cans for $10 are pretty good (and really useful) I’ve also had luck scoring them looking around in the trash on moving days each month in cities too.

City Museum - St. Louis, MO

n8r0n writes -
“I try to visit this place everytime I go home to see family. It is a great example reusing anything and everything to make something everyone can enjoy. If you are ever in the St. Louis area you need to check this place out. These people are true makers!
What happens when you mix two Saber 40 aircraft fuselages, a fire engine, a castle turret, a 25′ tall cupola and several 4′ wide wrought-iron slinkies, and the creativity of CITY MUSEUM Creative Director Bob Cassilly and his crew? The result is MonstroCity, the most monumental, monolithic, monstrous montage of monkey bars in the world. “ - Link.
Have cool places for makers to check out, let us know.

Flatland: The Movie (coming soon)

This is interesting, Flatland, the story of a 3rd dimensional visitor to 2D space, is going to be a movie (DVD 2007)… the trailer is pretty good - Link.
“Flatland: The Movie is an animated film inspired by Edwin A. Abbott’s classic novel, Flatland.
Set in a world of only two dimensions inhabited by sentient geometrical shapes, the story follows Arthur Square and his ever-curious granddaughter Hex. When a mysterious visitor arrives from Spaceland, Arthur and Hex must come to terms with the truth of the third dimension, risking dire consequences from the evil Circles that have ruled Flatland for a thousand years.
The movie will be part of an educational DVD, which will include the original text from the Abbott’s book”

Alone in the Wilderness…

Richard writes -
“Have any of you ever seen this 1968 doc about Dick Proenneke? Just watched it last night on PBS. Talk about a guy who could MAKE things!! He doesn’t just build a log cabin in Alaska, he builds his own tools, dishes, pots and pans, door hinges, refrigerator etc.! And he did it all with a 16mm camera and tripod filming everything he did for a year. He explains in detail the making of the tools, etc., and all with surprisingly “professional” camera work for a mountain man. If you get KQED Encore on cable, they’re showing it several times today. Enjoy!” - Link & more.

Pinball Hall of Fame, Las Vegas, NV

To kick off MAKE 08 (Toys and games) we’ll have a few fun posts from the world of Pinball… Awhile back I visited the Pinball Hall of Fame in Las Vegas (here are my photos) MAKE pal Mr. Kimberly just sent along his set to check out too… - Link.
The Pinball Hall of Fame is an attempt by the members of the Las Vegas Pinball Collectors Club to house and display the world’s largest pinball collection, open to the public. A not-for-profit corporation was established to further this cause. The games belong to one club member (Tim Arnold), and range from 1950s up to 1990s pinball machines. Since it is a non-profit museum, older games from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s are the prevelant, as this was the “heyday” of pinball. There are no “ticket spitters” here (aka kiddie casinos or redemption). It’s all pure pinball (and a few arcade […]

Skycraft Parts & Surplus, Inc. - Orlando, FL

Skycraft Parts & Surplus, Inc. in Orlando, FL *must* be an awesome place for Makers, 3 different readers all sent it in - here’s what they had to say…
This is a surplus store in Orlando (off fairbank just east of I4). It has everything from scrap metal to fasteners to NOS components to 3 foot tall variacs. Whenever I leave, I am not satisfied because there’s always another cool thing you didn’t leave with… - Paul.
This is the most awesome store on the planet! Need IC? Heat Shrink? Glass? Sheet Metal? Bomb casings? Resistors? Capacitors? You name it, they have it! I really miss this place (moved away) and haven’t found one like it near my new stomping grounds. I’m thinking about flying down there periodically to get my fix - Andrew.
A great electronics/surplus store in Orlando, FL. It’s […]
