iPod black box for planes

Interesting, a company (seems to be) using an iPod as a black box for airplanes…. With all these cars with iPod docks, it would be neat to have data logging on everything. Discuss in the comments!
Apple Computer’s popular iPod music player could become a flight data recorder (FDR) following an announcement by US light aircraft manufacturer LoPresti SpeedMerchants to introduce the device in the cockpit of its Fury piston aircraft.
The company says it plans the “full integration of the iPod into the Fury’s avionics systems”. The iconic ‘white box’ iPod will serve as a digital data recorder, nicknamed ‘black boxes’ by the general media. The iPod, with suitable software, acts as a hard disk with the ability to record over 500h of flight time data.
It was not immediately clear from the company’s statement which parameters would be recorded and for what purpose. Recorders are currently used to collect data for […]

Linux On iPod - TZX (ZX Spectrum cassette image) support

Matthew Westcott has a rad hack for Podzilla, he writes - “For those who don’t know, the ZX Spectrum was a 1980s home computer (very popular in the UK) for which software was commonly distributed on ordinary audio cassettes. These would contain several minutes of modem-like beeps and squeals that would assemble themselves into programs when played into the computer.
TZX is a file format for storing virtual images of these tapes, primarily for use with emulators - World Of Spectrum has thousands of them available for download. You could think of them as highly specialised, compressed audio files (typically under 50K for a complete Spectrum game) - and that’s exactly what this Podzilla patch does. It adds .tzx as another audio file format playable from the file browser. (The code is heavily derived from the existing WAV playback code.)
So, in short, you can now hook up your iPod to your […]

HOW TO - Enable the iPodScreenSaver

Ever wonder how the iPods at the Apple store play the video demos over and over? Easy, make a folder called “Demo Mode”, drop a movie called demo in it and you’re pretty much done. Handy for a mini kiosk… Thanks Asthmatic! - Link.

Getting a discount for an iPod destroyed by KOH/H2SO4/NaOCl is hard

Today is a sad day, my favorite blog entirely about high-level synthetic organic chemistry is closing.. But Dylan went out with a bang with his last post, returning a damaged iPod to get 10%, but it didn’t go so well… - “…if you return an old iPod you get 10% off on a new one. I said I had an iPod that was “damaged” and wanted to know if it would still qualify. Out of my backpack I produced a ziplock bag of iPod parts, destroyed by KOH/H2SO4/NaOCl. He inspected it for a moment, incredulous. The ploy was basically working in that he said it would probably still count, but then I asked if I could take his picture with the item. Big mistake.” - Link.

What’s inside an iPod game?

Apple (finally) has games for the iPod - but not a SDK or developer program (yet). Usually I run iPod Linux if I’m jonezing for that type of action on a music player (also see Rockbox), but like always I like to poke around and see what’s inside things, like the new IPG files (iPod games), last night I guessed that it was likely a ZIP file with stuff in it, but didn’t have time to explore much - luckily Ben did, here’s what he found… - “The .IPG file is actually just a ZIP archive. The archive contains many files, including AAC and WAV audio, XML, executables, language files, and more. I just started looking things over, but here are some of the interesting things I’ve found so far.” - Link.
It would neat if the iPod supported the Flash player or Processing, but who knows - maybe if there’s […]
