Ontario removes video slot machines over subliminal messaging

CBC has a story about slot machines getting pulled (no pun intended) over subliminal messaging - seems like it would be a fun experiment to try, winning and losing symbols…
Ontario’s provincial gambling operator has pulled 87 video slot machines out of service or physically removed them from its casinos after a CBC investigation found what appear to be subliminal messages flashing at players.
Ontario Lottery and Gaming, the recently rebranded Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp., is concerned about three games on video slots made by a company called Konami. It shut them down as a precaution on Friday, and is looking into the issue.
Every time this video lottery game is played, it briefly shows a jackpot result. Every time this video lottery game is played, it briefly shows a jackpot result.
The games flash winning jackpot symbols at players for a fifth of a second, long enough for the brain to detect […]

DIY Nintendo Wii classic controller clip 3D printed…

Chris writes -
I made a clip that connects the Nintendo Wii remote with its brother, the “classic controller.” It’s my best guess at what the mysterious unused button and associated slots are for on the classic controller. The part has been featured on video game websites such as Kotaku & Joystiq, as well as Digg & Engadget.
While the video game side of the story is probably of little interest to you all, what I think is interesting (as a MechE & a Make subscriber) is that I used my lab’s stereolithography rapid prototyping machine to make it. With the aid of some calipers, I was able to draft up the solid model in CAD in about an hour. I sent it to the machine, where it made the part in about 2 hrs with absolutely no supervision (i.e., I was able to go off and do […]

Nintendo DS Motion Card

I’d wait until they ship, but you can pre-order the DS Motion Card homebrew DS development, source and example code on the site…
“The DS Motion Card is a revolutionary motion sensor for the DS and DS Lite handheld gaming systems. It contains a 3-axis accelerometer and a single-axis gyroscope, and plugs into the DS card slot to enable full motion sensing on the DS and the DS lite.
It is the first tri-axis accelerometer that can be used for homebrew DS development, and the first and only accelerometer/gyroscope combination available for handheld gaming.” [via] - Link.

Wal*Mart.com selling DS homebrew gear

Brian writes -
“Datel’s MAX Media Dock for the Nintendo DS is a nifty little gadget that lets you play homebrew for the DS. From the press release:
“MAX Media Player can play MP3s directly from your flash card, giving you access to music on the move. It can also stream video footage, and access your JPEGs for a convenient photo viewer. Perhaps best of all, it can launch executable programs stored on the flash drive, giving access to a thriving NDS home brew scene.”
Even Wal*Mart and GameStop are getting in on the action…
I don’t think you’ll find these in their retail stores (please post a comment if you do!), and neither site makes mention of the homebrew capability in their online catalog pages. Still, it’s exciting to see homebrew sneaking into the mainstream again”.

Nintendo Wiimote Acceleration Sensor Reading

There’s been a lot of progress made with dissecting the operation of the Wiimote. This video was recently posted on youtube, showing a PC MATLAB graph of the Wii’s acceleration sensor data. Since this data is now technically available on the PC via bluetooth, it shouldn’t be too long before someone puts together a Wiimote enabled PC game.
The Wiimote wiki entry is a great resource if you’re interested in experimenting with this. [via] - Link.
