I regularly attend, and just completed writing a guide for three monthly public electronics swap meets in SoCal. Everything a maker desires can be found here for next to nothing: vintage radios, laptops, gauges, connectors, cables, leads, meters, scopes, tubes, you
name it.
The largest of the three swaps I track is this Saturday (Feb 24) in Manhattan Beach, CA in the parking lot of Northrop Grumman. I would absolutely LOVE to have a maker crowd there.

Here are some details about the Maker Faire auditions this Saturday from Nat… -
We are holding Maker Faire auditions this Saturday, Feb 24th at TechShop (120 Independence Dr.) in Menlo Park, CA from 10am to 2pm. I’ll be there with MAKE/CRAFT Publisher and Editor Dale Dougherty, Maker Faire Director Sherry Huss, and MAKE Editor David Pescovitz.
We are calling these “auditions” but it’s really a chance for you to just come by to meet the MAKE/CRAFT team and show us anything you are interested in teaching or showing at the Maker Faire. I’m hoping that all you Bay Area crafters will come by to show us your cool tunisian crochet, your innovative recycle crafts projects, your refashioning tips, needle arts, sewing, etc. — anything you’d love to share and teach other Crafters at the Maker Faire.
The Maker Faire is May 19 & 20 at the San Mateo County Fairgrounds in […]

John Cook from the Seattle PI has a great write up of our Ignite Seattle event! Congrats to Brady Forrest and Bre Pettis for doing an amazing event!
“There are not enough geek nights in Seattle.”
With those words, Make Magazine’s Bre Pettis kicked off Ignite Seattle’s inaugural “egg slam” competition at the Capitol Hill Arts Center.
The idea: Get a bunch of engineers, developers, artists and other techies in a room and see if they can use their talents to protect an egg from splattering against a wall.
The creative juices were flowing last night. One team inserted their egg in a rubber chicken. Another group suspended their egg by rubber bands and placed it in a protective covering. Balloons, carpet foam, Popsicle sticks and bubble wrap were just a few of the materials used.
A wooden catapult, with a milk crate for a launch device, shot the egg contraptions at a plastic sheet […]

Tomorrow night, February 12, Make: and Radar join forces for Ignite Seattle! Get your supplies ready and come on down and test your egg shielding contraption. Can you devise a way to protect an egg from breaking after it’s shot out of a giant slingshot against a wall? Pictured above is the slingshot being made by Divide and Rusty.
There isn’t a tall enough spot in the space to drop eggs from so now your egg contraption will get shot out of the egg canon and get slammed against a wall! Any contraption up to 18″x18″x18″, will fit into the canon, but if you keep it under 1 foot squared it will fit in the basket better. If everyone’s survive, another challenge will be presented until it’s narrowed down to the sturdiest contraptions. Winners will get a Make: or Craft: tshirt!
After the Egg Slam, there is […]

On February 13th, Brady and I will be hosting Ignite Seattle, a Maker/Geek event here in Seattle. We’re going to be having an egg drop. You make an egg-safety device that is smaller than an 18″ x 18″ x 18″ cube and less than 3 pounds. You bring it to the event at 6:30 PM at the CHAC upper level on February 13th and we’ll put it in a giant slingshot and smash it against the wall. If you’ve done an egg drop event and have any advice for me, drop me a note in the comments!
You can make your own egg safety container on your own time or you can come and work on your design as early as 4:30 if you want. I’ll have popsicle sticks, hot glue, and newspaper there for you to make your own. If you have any other ideas […]

Alright, so we only received one Superbowl 41 related project, so it’s our duty to post Paul’s article about building a stadium seating setup just in time for the Superbowl.. complete with a time lapse video, Paul writes -
Over the last month my roommates and I have been planning on building some means for having stadium seating in our living room. The living room isn’t too spacious and only had enough room for two futons. So, just in time for Superbowl Sunday, Chris and I have created a cheap deck for stadium seating. All it required was plywood, 4×4 & 2×4 wood, a box of wood screws and basic tools.
In hindsight, we probably should have measured things more than once. I showed this video to my architect sister and she said it lacked structure.
