Water Powered Batteries with MIT’s Walter Levin lessons

I have never seen this demonstration before. Water running through two small open cans into a larger metal collection container wired together to create 10,000 to 15,000 volts. Is it an accumulation of static electricity? If someone knows what is happening I would love to hear about it!

Dish Maker

The Dish Maker looks like an interesting product but I think the “recycling” process might be understated. I am assuming that the dirty dishes will need to be washed before being placed back into the machine so a dish washer will still be needed.
Video after the jump.
“Hate dishes? the DishMaker is a new kind of appliance that can replace dishes altogether by making cups, bowls and plates on demand and recycling them when you’re done. the device uses up the same room and energy as a dishwasher, while it replaces all the cabinets and dishes in your kitchen. the DishMaker takes advantage of a little-known shape-memory property of acrylic so that one dish can be recycled a thousand times without consuming the energy that does into a single-use ceramic dish.”

Robotic Beer Launching Fridge

What a fantastic idea! With the push of a button the Robotic Beer Launching Fridge will get a cold beer from inside the cooler and launch it right too you. Just make sure you don’t accidental sit on the launch button or you might be explaining a black eye. I think the next step in development should be the introduction of multiple remotes, or even fixed buttons that will launch the beers over to different locations.
Video after the jump.
“Have you ever gotten up off the couch to get a beer for the umpteenth time and thought, “What if instead of ME going to get the BEER, the BEER came to ME???” Well, that was how I first conceived of the beer launching fridge. About 3 months and several hundred dollars later I have a fully automated, remote controlled, catapulting, man-pit approved, beer launching mini-fridge. It holds 10 beers in its […]

Graffiti Research Lab’s L.A.S.E.R. Tag

Have a look at this laser light show! Guaranteed to get some attention…
Video after the jump.
“The main event of the GRL Rotterdam tour - ‘L.A.S.E.R TAG’ - 60mw geek graffiti madness.
Watch the video here on the Graffiti Research Lab website.
In the spirt of GRL’s and Eyebeam’s open source beliefs, we are posting the code and executable for the Laser Tag application online for you to download, dissect, reuse and hopefully improve. The code is C++ and compiled in a super old school Codewarrior IDE for windows but it is oepnGL based and written using openFrameworks which is a cross platform library for writing creative code. So it should be very straight forward to run in Visual Studio, DevC++ or even xcode on a mac.
In its simplest form the Laser Tag system is a camera and laptop setup, tracking a green laser point across the face of a building and generating […]

Move over Vista here comes Ubuntu 6.10 Linux with XGL and Kiba-Dock

Windows Vista is going to have to take a back seat to the amazing OS effects that Ubuntu 6.10 Linux with XGL Kiba-Dock can perform. Watch the video and be amazed. Hacking the Nintendo Wii Console

It is funny how these security experts can pick apart the Nintendo Game Cube and Wii security implementation. Have a close look at the connector in the picture, that’s right it says ‘insert modchip here’…
Video after the jump.
“Interesting if not long-winded explanation of DVD Security on Nintendo’s Wii
Cover’s everything from Nintendo’s original flaws in the Gamecubes copy protection and extensively covers the Wii’s security procedures, well worth a watch if console hacking is your thing…..”

Ontario Science Centre Hydraulophone - musical keyboard water fountain

Pipes, pumps and water can be used for many things. The most creative use must be a Funtain Hydraulophone.
Videos and additional pictures after the jump.
“The hydraulophone or poseidophone combines the simplicity of the piano with the interface of the tin flute or recorder. You play the hydraulophone by stopping the jets of water with your fingers or hands. By blocking multiple jets you can even play chords.
Starting from the left side of the hydraulophone Each jet corresponds to a note on the musical scale starting at “A’’, and moving through the musical alphabet, where each jet can be labeled as “A, B, C, D, E, F, G, a, b, c, d, etc.’’.
As people run their hands over the jets, a natural minor scale is played on the whole notes from “A’’ to “a’’ leading to melodies such as “The Ants Go Marching’’ or “Summertime’’. Starting on the jet “C’’ […]

CoilOSapien - Robosapien Coil Gun

This is an intro video of the CoilOSapien, Marcus will provide some build details in the near future!
Video after the jump.
“DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME KIDS!!!
The coilgun is controlled using the V2’s remote and is able to fire 8 shots with it’s electronic reload.
The charging time varies but is around the 5-10sec mark between shots, a red indicator light shows when the unit is charged and ready to fire, a laser sight aids in aiming.
A tutorial for the CoilOsapien hack will be found on my website this will discuss the theory and construction details of the coilgun modification.
Once again DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS HACK. Unless you are comfortable and familiar with potentially lethal voltages, eye damaging laser diodes and fast moving projectiles!!! ”
Thanks Robert

Induction HeatingMagical - non-contact heat

Ever wonder how induction heating worked? Me too… Penguin Labs has an informative article about some of their experiments.
“Induction cookers, furnaces, stoves and all that jazz are now widely used. You put your metal saucepan on top of an innocent looking glass plate and it magically heats your food with no flame and almost no waste heat.
They are able to heat certain metals up to their melting points, and that is very hot, obviously…
How they work?
When an alternating electric current is passed through a coil, the coil creates a magnetic field. The magnetic lines of flux cut through the air around the coil. If a ferrous material, such a solid bar of iron is inserted into this coil, certain effects known as eddy currents are induced to flow in the metal bar. This causes localised heating, and ultimately heats up the metal bar.

Kuka Juke Bot, the Robotic DJ

Want to be a DJ? You can go hands on with a modified Wiimote called the WiiJ. But when you get serious the Kuka industrial robotic DJ is the only way to go!
Videos and more pictures after the jump.
“The Juke Bot is a pair of Kuka industrial robots; each is surrounded by a set of platters (you know, vinyl LPs). The two bots act independently, deftly grasping an LP, and then bringing it to a platform with a phonograph needle. Delicately, the robot presses the LP against the needle and begins to rotate it forward and backward, creating a unique performance sound.”
