Easy Button Mod

Have a look at the TechDweeb, Univac has made a circuit bending mod to a Staples easy button. There are samples of the effects on his site also.
Bent Staples Button (listen to more)
Download EasySlo.mp3
“This is a terrible Staples Easy button (”That was easy!”) that I added a 1Meg pot to control pitch way way down until it now sounds really quite interesting, in a grainy, annoying, girl-killer-frequency (you know what I mean…) kind of way.
It was a very simple bend. Removed one resistor (there were only two) and replaced it with the pot. The hard part was fitting it inside the case. I ended up cutting a chunk out of the board that was just ground traces, put in the pot, then jumper wired the ground back together. It all fit nicely after that. And looks good too.”

Flashbag - USB Flash Drive with Micro Pump

This is almost as funny as the USB dog! I hope that’s a full flashbag in your pocket.
“The size of the device changes depending on the amount of data it holds.
When the device is about to blow up you will see the familiar error message on your screen: “There is not enough free space”.
When switched off the flashbag remains pumped up, so you can estimate with the naked eye how much more pics, books and music albums can be transferred into it. ”

Top 5 Coil Guns

Here is a list of 5 cool coil guns, either one would be fun to try out. Remember that coil guns can be dangerous, if you build one and shoot out your eye don’t say you weren’t warned.

5. The Mk II Coil RIfle

This is the second gun that Nicholas Howard has built.
“This is my second coil rifle, it has a firing energy of about 5 joules and it charges in about 10 seconds. the power source is the 12V 3.5AH SLA batery. This supplies the power to the 12v-240v inverter that provides the 240v requiered by the rectifacation circut. The 400v output from this circut is used to charge the two 400v 2200uF capacitors used to supply the energy to the work coil. it is capable of shooting through multiple soda cans.”

4. 18 Shot Repeat Coilgun

This one packs the punch of an automatic.
“Here it concerns a three speed CG in […]

PIC16F88 Delorme Tripmate GPS Logger

Using an old serial GPS the guys as Semifluid have made a home made GPS data logger on the cheap. As usual schematics and directions are on the site.
“This project focused on creating a simple serial data logger for the Delorme Tripmate (also known as the GPSTripmate). The Tripmate is an older GPS receiver that can be purchased on eBay for

Build a Six-Axis 3D Controller

Not a simple project, but it goes to show what can be created with old computer parts that most people toss in the garbage.
“The basic principle of Three Blind Mice is to run three threads round three rollers from old mechanical mice. By using the mouse reports to calculate the length of the extended thread this allows the position where all the threads join to be calculated. First job was to interface the mice to a PC. I am using old Microsoft Itellimice. The “z” axis on these mice which measures the position of the wheel is very low resolution and not suitable for this application. So, you need two mice to get the three axis of measurement required.
It turns out that Windows makes it rather hard to extract input from individual mice if you have several connected to your PC. It is also rather tricky to override the normal […]

Xbox 360 Tilt Controller

The Hole - video powered by Metacafe

The Hole - video powered by Metacafe

It takes lots of work to mod the Xbox 360 to act like a Wiimote. This Xbox 360 Tilt Controller reminds me of the this project. Great job! I look forward to the next hack…
“After wanting to play around with an accelerometer for a long time, I finally thought of an idea that would warrant me purchasing one, modifying an Xbox 360 controller to make one of the analog sticks controlled by the tilting motion of the Xbox controller.
The accelerometer works by outputting varying voltages for varying accelerations. I will use a 3-axis accelerometer so it will output 3 varying voltages. I will use an analog-to-digital converter to get the signals into a micro controller. The micro controller will do […]

SecureLED - Better Access Control

Now that lock bumping is gaining in popularity, this is looking like a nice option to me.
“OVERVIEW
SecureLED is an optical access control device which replaces current RFID or Magnetic Strip technologies with a cryptographically secure, contact-less device which communicates over commodity Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs).
PROJECT SUMMARY
This project started with one central premise: current physical access control systems are insecure in fundamental ways. We sought a way to remedy this problem, and came accross recent work which demonstrated the potential of communicating over cheap commodity LEDs. We used these as the basis of our system, building on top of it devices which use a cryptographically secure challenge-response protocol to authenciate a user.
As such, we built both a reader and a small key device (which we had originally planned to implement on an ATTiny2313, but did not for reasons listed below). The reader outputs the industry-standard Weigand protocol, so it is interoperable […]

WineM RFID Enabled Smart Wine Rack

This wine rack must be the smartest rack around.
“WineM is a Technology Sketch of a smart wine rack. It’s designed to locate wines in a wine rack using RFIDs attached to bottles and to display which wines have been located using LED backlights behind the bottles. Collectors (or anyone with a large wine cellar) can use it to search through collections, track the location of specific bottles and manage inventory with a minimum of data entry. Linking bottles to networked databases can provide information that would otherwise be too time consuming or difficult to obtain (for example, the total value of a collection, or all the wine that is ready to drink).
HOW DOES IT WORK?
The core technology is an RFID reader that is installed in each of the cells in the wine rack. These readers identify what RFID, and thus what bottle, is in what cell, so that it can […]

Solid Drive Speakers

Andy McCaskey of Slashdot Review took a look at a very interesting device at CES. Slap it onto a table (or almost any surface) and you have an instant speaker. Reminds me of the magneplanar technology.
“This was the most fascinating device that we saw today - Inductive Dynamics Inc makes devices that attach to walls or surfaces and turn them into speakers for home theater applications. In this photo, the sheet of glass is suspended vertically, and the transducer (small chrome plated cylinder at the bottom) makes the entire sheet of glass into a speaker. The rear screen projector is mounted high in the booth and is projecting the image on the glass - which gives the absolute “Princess Leia” effect standing in free space (not a total illusion 3D but 2D) . You can imagine glass speakers for department stores and the speaker / glass for boardroom situations.”

Bawls Blue Crystal LED Light

The Bawls Blue Crystal LED Light project that reminds me of my Bawls project.
“I have seen a lot of creative projects which utilize the popular “Bawls” bottles. Other projects had two features which I wanted to improve on;
1: The common use of batteries instead of a more permanent power source
2: The intensely bright spots which LEDs often produce
I based some of my design off of other projects and modified the points I wanted to improve on, this resulted in the Bawls Blue Crystal LED Light seen bellow.”

Canadians create special gloves for gadget lovers

Stay warm and still be cool with a pair of these gloves.
“It’s freezing outside, especially if you live in blizzard areas, and touching the talk button on the cellphone with big bulky gloves is a daily problem we all face. Fortunately for us, a company in Montreal has solved the problem of operating all your gadgets while keeping your hands warm. The glove is called iTWYF or, I Touch With Your Fingers.(uhhhh?…) Three of the fingers have enhancements: the thumb has a velcro strap that exposes that finger, the index finger has a leather strip that can be used for “target-specific” fingering like iPoding, and the middle finger has a tiny stud on it that you can use as a stylus for touchscreens. The gloves actually don’t look bad [Of course, by this, David means they look horrible. Right? -Ed.] and they come in three colors and sizes […]

Improve Cheap RF Mouse Range

Check out this article to improve the range of a bargain bin wireless mouse.
“While shopping at Microcenter, I found a “bargain” wireless mouse and keyboard combination on sale for $12.99. I wanted to add something like this to my media center and the price was really low so I decided to give it a try. The first attempt at using this proved that you really do get what you pay for. Both the mouse and keyboard work fine if they are only a foot or two from the receiver, however, the mouse stops working intermittently as the range is increased. After playing with a few different designs, I settled on a 15-turn bundle of insulated wire to be attached in series with the single turn antenna on the board.”
