Maker Faire proposal deadline extended to Sunday March 18, 2007

Dale has some good news - the Maker Faire proposal deadline has been extended!
We are getting many, many terrific proposals for Maker Faire. Nearly half of them have come in at the last two days. To relieve this crunch, we’ve decided to extend the deadline about two weeks to Midnight (PST) Sunday March 18.
We will begin reviewing all of those proposals submitted by the deadline and follow up on them very soon. In other words, if you got your proposal in by the deadline, you’ll hear from us before the date of the new extended deadline. You’ll be ahead of the rest of them.
Last year, we did accept a bunch of proposals up until the week before the Faire because it’s hard to say no to cool projects. However, accepting late proposals means that the programs […]

MAKE Digital Edition (it’s like the ITS but made from BITS)

Awhile back a reader asked what the MAKE digital edition is and what the links in the blog posts do if you’re a MAKE subscriber, so here’s a quick screencast/video I made. You can view it here or get the MP4.
MAKE Digital Edition is a vivid replica of the print edition of MAKE, it offers an experience very much like the print magazine plus many additional benefits, such as online searching, embedded multimedia and printing. Please note that MAKE Digital Edition can be viewed from any web browser (i.e. Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari etc.) and requires NO DOWNLOADING of software (it’s not a DRM’ed PDF, just a log in and password) - giving you instant access to your entire MAKE collection. You can share it, print it and get extra content - we have the FAQ here too.
What is MAKE - Digital Edition?

How do I add digital editions to my […]

Get the MAKE blog sent to you each day via email

Hey Makers, a lot of readers have asked if there was a way to get all the posts from the MAKE blog sent to them each day via email - I evaluated a few fee/free services and we’re pleased to launch the MAKE daily newsletter. All you need to do is enter your email address and you’ll get the MAKE blog delivered each day. We don’t store/sell/share your email address and every newsletter has an unsubscribe link.
So, take it for a spin for a few days - I think this is a great way to keep up on all things in the world of making delivered right to your inbox.
*Note: I know it’s obvious, but… the sign up page says “Start your FREE subscription to MAKE: Daily - The MAKE blog delivered to your inbox each day …” it’s not for the print magazine, it’s to our blog - I’m […]

“Do-it-Yourself” ads for online video - MAKE

Some of you have noticed something very cool and very new in our MAKE videos recently - at the end of some of our videos there is a BUY button for our kits we sell in our Maker store in the video along with some additional information. This is a “DIY ad”, a new feature from our video provider blip.tv - we made this ourselves. MAKE worked with blip.tv to develop an ad system so any Maker / video producer can create their own ads for their own goods/services and place them in the videos they produce. It’s extremely new, a very simple idea really - but we think it’s going to really take off.
For MAKE we can bring you the best how-to videos, encourage sharing of the videos and -inside- the video deliver up our own stuff from our own store, events, etc. They’re clickable and easy for us […]

MAKE housekeeping - email

We’re getting a new email system this weekend at MAKE, so if you send us an email over the weekend it might not get to us, or be a bit delayed if you’re looking for an immediately reply - we also had an outage this week and I wanted to thank all the folks who let us know as it happened. That’s it for now, have a great weekend, go make something clever!

500+ GB - poof

It happens to all of us at least once it seems, data loss. A couple weeks ago a flood hit my apartment/office area and soaked the desktop system, monitors, equipment *and* back up drive (along with a ton of other stuff) - luckily I have a daily back up on a Powerbook. But, of course the Powerbook decided to completely stop working while at our ETSY event before that could be backed up too. Zapping the PRAM revealed the hard drive failed, so the usual steps of Disk Util, TechTool and then finally drive removal and DiskWarrior were attempted - for the most part the drive seems completely dead - there might be a chance to recover some data under linux, or from a data recovery shop, but it’s not looking good. So, years of work, designs, presentations, papers, 40k emails, videos, photos, articles, jeez everything really - gone, […]
